Keeping cozy: Simple tips for a warmer home in Kenya’s cold season

Kenya may be known for its sunshine, but the arrival of cooler temperatures can bring a welcome change. However, that refreshing coolness can quickly turn into a shiver-inducing chill if your home isn’t prepared. Here are some simple steps to keep your living space warm and comfortable during the cold season:

Block the Drafts: Drafty windows and doors are the enemy of warmth. Inspect them for gaps and cracks. Seal them with caulk or weather-stripping to prevent cold air from sneaking in. You can also use inexpensive draft stoppers made from fabric or foam to further insulate doorways.

Embrace Layering: Just like clothing, your home can benefit from layers. Invest in some throw rugs, especially for tiled or hardwood floors. Carpets and rugs add a layer of insulation and feel much warmer underfoot. Consider hanging thick curtains or blinds on windows – these can create a barrier against the cold and trap some heat inside.

Rearrange for Warmth: A little furniture repositioning can make a big difference. Move couches and beds away from drafty windows and doors. If possible, position furniture to create a cozier, more compact living area during the colder months.

Bedding Up for Comfort: Swap out lightweight sheets for warmer cotton or flannel options. Invest in extra blankets and a thick duvet to keep you warm at night. A hot water bottle is a simple and effective way to pre-warm your bed before climbing in.

Harness the Power of the Sun: Open your curtains and blinds during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home.  However, close them in the evening to trap the warmth inside.

Get Crafty with Warmth: For an extra touch of warmth, consider making some draft excluders from fabric stuffed with old clothes or towels. You can also create a festive atmosphere with warm-toned throws and pillows.

By following these tips, you can transform your Kenyan home into a cozy haven during the cooler months. With a little preparation, you can enjoy the refreshing change of season without feeling the cold.
