The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has officially appointed David Kibet Kemei as its new Director-General, effective October 7, 2024.
Mr. Kemei is tasked with spearheading the Authority’s mandate under the Competition Act (CAP 504), ensuring fair competition, safeguarding consumer rights, and addressing emerging challenges in Kenya’s evolving economic landscape.
In his new role, Mr. Kemei will focus on “enhancing stakeholder collaboration, safeguarding market integrity, and aligning with global best practices to address challenges in Kenya, regionally, and internationally,” according to a statement from the CAK.
Mr. Kemei brings over 30 years of experience in regulatory, financial, corporate governance, and commercial sectors. He has previously held senior roles in organizations like the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), Nation Media Group, and Kenya Reinsurance Corporation. His leadership spans multiple areas, including corporate management, resource mobilization, and regulatory oversight.
“A strong competition regime is the backbone of a thriving economy,” Mr. Kemei said. He added that his goal is to ensure the Authority continues to “spur economic growth by creating efficient markets that work for consumers and protect them from exploitation.”
The appointment comes after a rigorous recruitment process involving parliamentary vetting. Mr. Kemei takes over from Dr. Adano Wario, who served as the Acting Director-General since January 2023. Dr. Wario was praised for steering the Authority through a critical transition period and overseeing the enforcement of competition law, including “landmark interventions and sanctions against market abuse and cartel conduct,” noted Shaka Kariuki, Chairman of the CAK Board.
