Cabinet secretaries face mounting scrutiny in Ruto strongholds

Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) are under heightened scrutiny and criticism from political figures, particularly in the political stronghold of President William Ruto.

Allegations have emerged accusing the CSs of prioritizing politics over development, leading to imbalanced resource allocation and undermining the President’s pursuit of equitable resource distribution.

The discord became apparent during a recent public exchange between Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok and CS Kipchumba Murkomen. Governor Barchok accused CS Murkomen of withholding funds for road projects in his county. Tensions escalated further when CS Davis Chirchir faced heckling during a public event in the presence of President Ruto.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei and Emmurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno have emerged as vocal critics of the CSs. They have expressed their intention not only to publicly criticize but also to hold the CSs accountable through established parliamentary processes. The leaders also accuse the CSs of engaging in political activities, with Ngeno asserting that they are “drunk with power” and manipulating their positions to favor specific regions in resource allocation.

A recent event presided over by CS Ababu Namwamba, the unveiling of Kiprugut Chumo Stadium (formerly Kericho Green Stadium), drew attention as it was boycotted by all local elected leaders. Namwamba faced allegations of excluding local leadership from the event, with some claiming they were only invited to a morning meeting and not mobilized to attend the function.

Similar incidents involving Cabinet Secretaries have transpired, such as CS Murkomen being jeered by residents of Baringo County. These occurrences underscore the mounting dissatisfaction with government policies, including increased taxation, and a perceived disconnect with some Cabinet Secretaries.

Despite the controversies, Cabinet Secretaries assert their commitment to implementing government programs and contend that the criticism is politically motivated. The ongoing rift between political leaders and Cabinet Secretaries raises concerns about its potential impact on governance and development initiatives in Kenya’s Kwvanza strongholds. It also mirrors broader challenges in striking a balance between politics and governance, with potential repercussions for the execution of crucial government projects and programs.

The evolving dynamic between political leaders and Cabinet Secretaries may continue to shape the political landscape leading up to future elections.
