Base Titanium seeks new prospecting license in Kwale

Base Titanium has applied for a prospecting license to explore Titanium, Rutile, Zircon, and Ilmenite minerals in Kwale County.

The Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs has issued a public notice inviting the public to provide feedback on the license application within 21 days.

Late last year, the company announced that once the current Kwale Ore Reserves are exhausted by December 2024 as anticipated, Kwale Operations will transition to post-mining activities as planned.

Objections to any prospecting license can be submitted to the Cabinet Secretary within 21 days from the date of the notice.

“The application can be accessed through the Ministry’s portal at https://portal.miningcadastre.go.ke and is also published in the Kenya Gazette, open for public comment for 21 days from the date of the notice,” stated Salim Mvurya, former CS Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs.

Tim Carstens, Managing Director of Base Resources, noted that the company has explored all options to extend the life of Kwale Operations. However, despite significant efforts and strong local community support, Base Titanium has not found additional mineral deposits of sufficient grade or scale to justify a further extension.

“Our focus at Kwale now shifts to detailed closure planning and transitioning to post-mining land use, while ensuring we continue to safely extract maximum value from the remaining ore reserves. Kwale Operations has been the cornerstone of Base Resources, and while it will be disappointing to conclude a project we take great pride in, we view the transition to post-mining as an opportunity to solidify our reputation for excellence throughout the mining life cycle,” Carstens added.
