Kenya, Eritrea Abolish Visa Requirements

Kenya and Eritrea have agreed to abolish visa requirements permanently for citizens moving between the two countries.

The announcement comes after President William Ruto held bilateral talks with his Eritrean counterpart Isaiah Afwerki in Nairobi,Kenya on Thursday, February 9.

Announcing the decision, President Ruto said the move will aid the easier movement of goods and people between the two nations, hence contributing to their economic robustness.

“To facilitate growth in Trade and connectivity between our people and business, we have agreed to abolish the requirement of Visas permanently, effective today,” said President Ruto.

On his part, President Afwerki said he was committed towards making any steps that will enhance economic and political goodwill between his country and Kenya.

“We will keep promoting joint investment and work together towards enhancing sustainable peace and security,” said Afwerki.

The establishment of a visa-free relationship between Kenya and Eritrea is the second such move since President Ruto assumed office in September 2022.

In 2022, Ruto reached an agreement with his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa that ushered in visa-free travel between Kenya and the Southern African economic hub beginning January 2023.
