Nation Media Group (NMG) has launched the fourth annual Kusi ideas festival on Thursday, December 8, with an emphasis on climate change.

The two-day event comes after the just concluded COP27 in Egypt. This year’s festival is themed “Climate Change: Exploring African Responses and Solutions” examining how the continent is being affected by the warming climate, from how it will affect food security to what resources and technology will be required to lessen its effects on the environment and its people.

NMG Chairman Wilfred Kiboro urged partners in a speech at Karura Forest during the launch to contribute value and empower society on climate change.

“We have always been fortunate to attract resources and knowledgeable experts who work passionately on African issues. At this fourth festival, you have honored our invitation and come in even larger numbers. We value you and look forward to drinking from your wisdom,” Kiboro said.

“17 African countries agreed to test the Single African Air Transport Market a few days ago (SAATM). These nations comprised, to name a few, Kenya, Ghana, Morocco, and Nigeria. We are appreciative that ideas generated at that event received international notice.”

“This exemplifies how the business is carrying out its purpose to act as the “Media of Africa for Africa,” which strives to set the agenda for placing Africa as a significant player in global politics and economics.” he continued to add.

While Virtually addressing the fourth edition of the Kusi Awards, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame said the Climate crisis is a threat to Africa’s development, stressing that all hope is not lost because the continent is rich in renewable energy sources which makes Africa pivotal in the search for climate solutions.

Other dignitaries attending the event were Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Equity Group CEO James Mwangi, KCB Group CEO, Paul Russo among others.

NMG created the Kusi Ideas Festival four years ago as a pan-African platform to examine the continent’s place in the world; its citizen’s problem-solving ideas and innovations; and how they prepare to deal with the coming challenges. Previous festivals have been held in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2019, in Kisumu, Kenya, in 2020, and in Accra, Ghana, in 2021.

Africa continues to be among the worst hit by the consequences of climate change, despite having contributed the least to global warming and having the lowest emissions.
