Later on, Gates is expected to do a comprehensive tour of Makueni county, where he will meet with a few farmers from Kathonzweni and also visit the Makueni Mother and Child hospital and Kathonzweni Health Centre. He will be received by governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.

Additionally, Bill Gates is scheduled to speak to college students in a hybrid conference that will be hosted by former Citizen TV journalist Uduak Amimo on Thursday, November 17 at the University of Nairobi (UoN), to learn and share insights on how innovative tools and techniques might support Africa’s efforts to promote food security and climate adaptation.

Gates’ trip to Kenya comes just a few days after he announced Ksh170 billion in financing for African climate change initiatives. The funding will be used to create technologies that can assist farmers in forecasting weather patterns, Kenyan farmers being the main beneficiaries.

Gates is expected to also announce the commitment of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to funding fresh ideas and inventiveness targeted at enhancing health, food security, and gender equality in African nations.

MyDawa, a Kenyan e-pharmacy startup, recently received Ksh145 million (USD1.2 million) from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation aimed at creating the first telehealth program in the country, with the goal of lowering HIV prevalence.

On Monday, October 24, 2022, at the Grand Challenges Annual Meeting, the company acknowledged that it had already created a virtual healthcare solution intended to make it simple for people to get PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) services.

The Foundation

The former couple established the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 after reading a newspaper article that discouraged them after reading how it described how children were dying in several countries throughout the world from diseases that may have been prevented, being new parents at the time.

Since then, the foundation, which was created through the merger of two distinct organizations, has participated in health efforts, particularly in Africa.

Due to the success of his IT company at the time, Gates was ranked the richest man in the world. According to Forbes’ most recent ranking, the billionaire’s current estimated net worth is USD103 billion.

Bill Gates last visited the country back in 2016.
