Kenya’s police force has sent an emergency response team to Kajiado County following the shooting of prominent Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) announced on Monday morning that it was investigating the incident where Mr Sharif was shot to death on Sunday night at a police-manned roadblock in Kajido County.

Mr Sharif was on his way to Nairobi from Magadi with his driver when he was killed at the police checkpoint. Although police are yet to make an official statement regarding the incident, it is reported that the car had been flagged down by police but disobeyed the orders. His driver was injured and rushed to hospital.

The famous journalist had earlier expressed his disapproval of the current political trends in Pakistan. With a focus on investigative reporting journalism, Sharif covered numerous political events in his homeland for both local and international news outlets.

Sharif, a vocal critic of the Pakistani leadership, departed the nation earlier this year as a result of several sedition charges that were raised against him.

The news of his passing away was broken by his wife Javeria Siddique through social media.

“I lost my friend, husband and my favourite journalist Arshad Sharif today, as per police he was shot in Kenya. Respect our privacy and in the name of breaking please don’t share our family pics, personal details and his last pictures from the hospital. Remember us in your prayers, ” mourned his wife in a social media post.

The circumstances surrounding his death are still unknown. A formal statement of his passing is yet to be made public by the Pakistan High Commission in Nairobi.
