Transport and Public works CS nominee Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, proposed a camera-backed e-police system that will be used for collecting fines from traffic offences.

Speaking to the National Assembly’s committee on appointments, he claimed that the funds raised may be added to the government’s various infrastructure projects.

“We will deploy the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and we’ll therefore have no need for the analogue way of dealing with discipline on our roads,” he said.

Prior to this, Murkomen promised to improve the technological infrastructure at border crossings to relieve truck traffic along the Northern Corridor. He emphasized that the Kenya Revenue Authority’s weak technology network, which it uses to clear trucks, is what has caused the gridlock along the Malaba border.

“As a result of the technology being used sometimes even, it’s about the internet being used. We will be able to work with the relevant ministries of Finance and the Kenya Revenue Authority to ensure they put in place modern technology for the clearance of goods,”

The Elgeyo Marakwet senator also stated that he will start making arrangements to set up a parking space that will help to relieve the traffic. The CS nominee also added that the parking will increase revenue since payment plans for truck drivers will be put in place.

Murkomen offered to resolve the issue of unpaid bills by using the road maintenance tax to guarantee a one-time infrastructure bond when discussing the outstanding invoices owed to contractors. He also declared he would tour the nation to learn firsthand about the nation’s infrastructure needs and advancements.
