Ugandan long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei has passed away due to organ failure, after suffering severe burns in a domestic violence incident. The 33-year-old Olympian, who competed in the marathon at the Paris Olympics this year, died at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, Kenya, on Thursday.

Cheptegei sustained 80 percent body burns after her estranged partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, allegedly doused her in petrol and set her on fire at her home in Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya, on Sunday. At the time of the attack, Cheptegei and her children were at church, and Ndiema reportedly sneaked into the house and waited for her return.

“All her organs failed last night,” confirmed Owen Menach, the Clinical Services Director at MTRH. Cheptegei’s daughters witnessed the assault, with one recounting efforts to seek help from a neighbor, but it was too late.

Ndiema, who also sustained burns during the incident, is currently receiving treatment for 30 percent burns. His arrest and prosecution are anticipated as calls for justice grow louder.

The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) confirmed the tragic news on their official X account, condemning the act of violence and calling for justice for Cheptegei. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. May her soul rest in peace,” the post read.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence in Kenya, recalling the tragic deaths of athletes Damaris Mutua in 2022 and Agnes Tirop in 2021.
