Hassan Omar has been officially confirmed as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General, according to a statement by the Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu. His appointment follows the removal of Cleophas Malala, who had been serving in the role on an interim basis since February 2023.

Nderitu’s confirmation came after receiving formal communication from UDA regarding the leadership change. She emphasized the importance of the party holding elections within the next six months to ensure all office holders are substantively appointed. “The office also notes that most of the current UDA officials are holding positions on an interim basis. In line with good governance practices and the mandate of this office, the party is hereby directed to finalize the party elections as soon as practically possible but not later than a hundred and eighty (180) days from the date of this letter,” Nderitu stated.

Further directives included the requirement for UDA to publish the change of the Secretary General in at least one daily newspaper and on its official website. “Pursuant to Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, 2011 the party is guided to publish the change of the official in at least one daily newspaper having nationwide circulation and in the official party website and notify the office for further processing,” Nderitu added.

The ruling party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) revoked Malala’s interim appointment during a meeting on August 2, 2024, chaired by party chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire. The decision to appoint Omar was made following wide and consultative deliberations, in accordance with Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution.

“The appointment of Cleophas Malala as the interim Secretary General is hereby revoked,” the NEC declared. This decision came shortly after an incident where Malala’s supporters stormed the party offices, coinciding with another group’s announcement of Joe Khalende as the new Secretary General. In response to the scuffle, Mbarire indicated that the NEC meeting would address the incident and make necessary decisions.
