Kenya Revenue Authority has collected Ksh. 149.6 billion from taxes in the month of August alone.

In the same month last year, KRA managed to collect 125.3 billion, with the new figure showing an improvement of Ksh 24.3 billion.

The total amount collected in 2022 for the month of July and august is Ksh. 280.2 billion, posting a Ksh. 32.4 billion increase from last year’s collection of Ksh. 247.8 billion in the two months.

The collection is attributed to the enhanced economic environment as businesses seek to regain normalcy  post-COVID-19.

Streamlining the collection processes is also said to have had a hand in the growth.

The tax man anticipates raising Ksh. 2.02 trillion by the end of the financial year 2023, but the goal seems highly unlikely since the collection has to realize an average of above Ksh. 1.79 every month.

However, KRA hopes to step up in its role and ensure that no coin is left uncollected in a bid to meet the promise made to President William Ruto of helping him meet his development agenda.

KRA has also stated that it will be embarking on dialogue this time round to try and forge a truce with defaulters on the payment plans.

One of the previous victims of KRA’s wrath is Keroche CEO Tabitha Karanja, who saw her distiller closed and staff arrested over tax arrears owed by her company.
