Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has commended the repair works currently underway at Jomo Kenyatta Airport aim to solve perennial leakages at the airport whenever it rains heavily.

Speaking when he visited the facility to inspect the progress, he attributed the extensive flooding  airport  to inadequate drainage infrastructure and blockages and at the same time  said he was happy that the works were going on as scheduled.

In efforts to prevent future flooding, Murkomen disclosed that the Cabinet has approved a proposal to develop a comprehensive master plan for the drainage system in Nairobi, with intentions to replicate it across the country. This plan aims to enhance water management for the next fifty years.

After inspecting the heavily affected areas of the airport, namely the Cargo Section and Terminal 1C, two days subsequent to the disruption caused by flooding, the CS declared plans to install gutters to tackle the problem.

“I encourage the warehouses to have the protective grills…it is not only the airport but also on the roads and goes into the drainage system and the encroachment of riparian sections…we have a master plan to sort the drainage for the next 50 years,” said Murkomen.

JKIA, a crucial trade and transportation hub for goods and people across the country, the region and the globe, has had its reputation marred with frequent power outages. To this effect Murkomen assured a thorough revamp of the tent structure, with immediate actions such as gutter installations to alleviate rainwater pooling, while concurrently constructing a modern roof. He projected that the modern roof would be finalized within a month.
