The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has unveiled CCTV images of the primary suspect linked to the brutal killing of 20-year-old university student Rita Waeni.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the DCI announced that it has carried out comprehensive forensic examinations, indicating that the investigation into the murder is in its final phases.

“Elaborate forensic analyses have so far been done by the investigating team, capturing the deceased’s last moments and linking probable suspects to her murder.

Further, detailed statements by persons of interest have been recorded and more data sourced from digital platforms to ensure that all leads to Rita’s killer(s) are utilized,” the investigative agency said.

They have since obtained CCTV footage of the man walking with Waeni towards a room where she was found dead in Roysambu and are now calling upon Kenyans to to volunteer information that will help in the arrest of the prime suspect.

The authorities have also determined that the unidentified individual initiated contact with the deceased, Waeni, on October 2, 2023, using an Instagram account registered under the alias Carlton Maina. DCI says the account name was later changed several times and finally pulled down immediately after the student’s murder.

“The Homicide Directorate calls upon anyone who can identify the man whose images (though blurry) appear on this post, to come forward and share information that may assist in his arrest,” DCI said.

Waeni was found dead on January 14 in a short-term rental apartment in Nairobi’s Roysambu area. Her body was dismembered and its head was missing. It was later found at a dam in Kiambu County on January 21.

On February 15, the Makadara Law Court released two Nigerian citizens who had been detained in relation to the murder case.

While initially granting permission for the police to hold William Ovie Opia and Johnbull Asbour, who had been in custody since January 22, the court ordered them to report to investigators weekly as the investigation progresses.
