Bunge towers opening sparks debate: Wetangula cautions MPs, opposition calls for oversight

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, has cautioned Members of Parliament against criticizing the upcoming opening of Bunge Towers. Speaking during a session in the House, Wetangula warned MPs that they could face disciplinary action if they speak out against the project without adequate information.

He made these remarks in response to Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi’s concerns about the negative publicity surrounding the opening of the building. Wandayi stressed the importance of Parliament restoring its reputation regarding the project.

“The building is ready, there are six high speed lifts all working sufficiently as any building you would find in Manhattan in the US. The offices are ready, the furniture has been put in place, the gym has been equipped, the kitchen and modern dining is in place,” he stated.

He assured the House that the building is ready for use and urged members to dismiss any concerns raised by critics. Wetangula also announced that the President will officially inaugurate the premises on Friday.

Wetangula, who doubles as the chair of the Parliamentary Service Commission, urged members to disregard critics and focus on embracing the facility constructed with taxpayer funds.

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo proposed bringing the issue to the attention of the Public Accounts Committee to investigate potential fraud. Meanwhile, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei called for delaying the opening of the house until important questions are addressed. The construction of the building began in 2010 with an initial budget of KES 5.89 billion, which was later increased to KES 7.1 billion before ultimately reaching KES 9.6 billion.
