Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has demanded the impeachment of Energy Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir.
The call stems from Chirchir’s failure to adhere to a Senate summon aimed at eliciting answers regarding the tragic gas explosion in Embakasi.
During a session addressing the Senate Energy Committee Chairman, Wahome Wamatinga, on Wednesday, the MP, Babu, condemned Chirchir’s defiance, asserting that such actions warrant his impeachment.
According to the MP, Chirchir’s unreliability as a witness has been demonstrated, necessitating his impeachment. Babu attributed negligence on Chirchir’s part to the explosion, emphasizing that Chirchir should have conducted an investigation when the gas plant resumed operations despite the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) rejecting its licenses.
The MP further criticized Chirchir’s absence during the explosion, lamenting his departure to another country purportedly to serve Kenyan interests while citizens were grappling with fatalities and severe injuries.
Chirchir’s disregard for the summon follows the Senate Energy Committee’s request for his appearance to clarify the circumstances surrounding the explosion, which occurred at Mradi village in Embakasi on February 2.
