The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) apprehended the Kilifi Assistant County Commissioner, Teddy Buya Bonaya, on Wednesday. Bonaya stands accused of embezzling and unlawfully vending relief food with an estimated value of KES 550,200.
Allegedly, Bonaya misappropriated 105 bags of rice and one bag of beans in the year 2020, resources intended to aid the vulnerable population of Tana North in Tana River County.
This incident occurred during his tenure as an Assistant Commissioner in Tana River before he was subsequently relocated to his current role in Ganze sub-county, Kilifi County.
In April 2020, the anti-graft commission initiated investigations following reports of the disappearance of 300 bags of relief food allocated to residents of Tana North.
Subsequently, the investigative findings were forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for the purpose of charging the suspect with abuse of office, as stipulated in Section 46 in conjunction with Section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, 2003.
The individual, identified as Bonaya, was apprehended in Malindi town and promptly transported to the EACC Garissa Regional Offices for processing. He is scheduled to appear before the Garissa anti-corruption court on Thursday, March 1, 2024.
